Since being a good girl has gotten her nothing but heartache, Charli decides to give rebellion a try. She pigs out, drinks, and hangs with Luke Parker, the son of the infamous Bourbon Butcher.

But there’s more to Luke than meets the eye. His tough exterior and terrible dialect hide a good person despite his bad boy reputation. Though they’re from opposite sides of the tracks, neither can resist the magnetism drawing them together.

Character Bios

Hi YA Book Divas! Thanks so much for hosting A Shot of Bourbon and me. I’ve done a fun little twist on the Character Bios and written them in the first person from each character’s POV.

Charlotte ‘Charli’ Valentine-

I’m what my best friend, Lonna, considers vertically challenged. I have dark hair and eyes and tan skin and I love bread (even though Mom says it makes me bloat). Oh wait, was I supposed to write about my personality?

Okay, um. I’m faithful. I would never tell any of Lonna’s secrets to anyone. I’ve had an insane crush on the same boy for…oh, I don’t know, ever. But he doesn’t really seem to notice me anymore. And now that he’s hanging all over someone else I’m not really sure what to do.

I live in a gated community, Camelot, on the north side of Bourbon. My parents live there too—my mom and step-dad, that is. I’ve always known Preston is my step-dad. But while he and mom are away on vacation this summer I have every intention of finding my real dad. Every girl deserves to know the truth.

Luke Parker-

I wouldn’t even be doing this bio garbage if Charli hadn’t talked me into it. I don’t talk right. Not because I can’t, but because talking slow keeps people from wanting to talk to me. I’m crabby and hard around to get along with. I settle disagreements with my fists because that gets things settled quicker. When I’m not playing football or at school, I work at Parker’s Garage, a family owned and operated auto shop on the south side of town. Since Mom died four years ago, I’ve been living with Midjey. He’s sort of my brother, but I hate calling the drug addict family. Growing up in Bourbon, Missouri has been hell. Everyone knows me as the son of the Bourbon Butcher. Only I know the truth.

Excerpt:
Football. The imbecile didn’t even realize it was the soccer field. The football team practiced halfway across campus. “Something like that,” she said with amusement, longing to see his reaction to her plans. Stepping back from the trunk, she turned to fully face him. Her eyes roved over his face for a moment before she closed the small distance between them. She slipped her arms around his waist and leaned in against his chest. She amped up her flirting to the next level, wanting him to let his guard down completely. “Before we get started … kiss me. I want to know what your lips feel like against mine. I want to know what you taste like.”
Without any hesitation, he lowered his lips over hers.
And that was when Sasha pulled back with a snort. “Alec was right. You have absolutely no idea what it’s like being friends with a girl. You went into this with the instruction of ‘friends only’. Yet you’re trying to kiss me ten minutes in.” Shaking her head, she grabbed the edges of her sundress and pulled it up over her head. Underneath, she wore a sports bra and a pair of bike shorts. From the trunk, she produced a pair of knee-high socks and cleats.
Matt took a step back, looking thoroughly stunned.
She turned her back on him, reaching into her trunk for her soccer ball as she hid her smile. It really was a shame: Matt was a charismatic guy, and he was so darn good-looking. He was into sports, same as her, and they shared a close confidant in Alec. If she could just get him to break down his walls and drop his act, there was a possibility they truly could be friends. His adaption to the change in plans now would tell her just how likely that outcome could be.
She roughly tossed the ball in his direction, and he barely managed to catch it. Apparently, he was still working through confusion and surprise at her abrupt change of attitude. She would just need to help him along to a more modern way of thinking. “You know, the majority of us don’t discuss lip gloss,” Sasha said with a snicker, referring to a tidbit Alec had shared of Matt’s skewed views on women. “If you’d ever bothered to hold a real conversation with a girl, you’d know that.” She bent at the waist and threw her hair down toward the ground. Gathering it in one hand, she bundled it all together in a high ponytail atop her head.
Flipping back up to face him, she placed her hands on her hips. “Game on, Matty. Time to learn what it’s like to actually hang out with a girl.” Ticking items off on her fingers, she made a list of all the things they wouldn’t be doing. “No candlelight dinners. No kissing. No eyelash batting. No flirting. I’m going to kick your ass out on that field, and make you question everything you know about women.”

Love Me Never (Lovely Vicious) by Sara Wolf {Excerpt Tour + Giveaway}

EntTeen-LovelyVicious-webbanner-ad1-STATIC(851x315)

Don’t miss today’s Excerpt Tour for Love Me Never (Lovely Vicious, #1) by Sara Wolf, which releases on Tuesday, April 5, 2016!

“That’s n-not what I meant—” Kayla starts. “And you seem exactly like the type of girl to stay with friends she hates. They probably hate you, too. It must be easy, hiding it behind all that booze and all those name brands.” Kayla’s tears overflow onto her cheeks. Jack sighs. “You’re so spineless you collapse into tears the second anyone says the truth?” My heart’s thumping in my chest. My fists squeeze so tight I can’t feel my fingers. His cruelty leaves a bitter taste in my mouth—it’s a lot like someone I used to know. Someone who ruined my life forever. I shove aside the red-faced boy who tries to hit on me again and launch myself through the crowd. Kayla isn’t my friend. No one here is. But she’s been four seconds of nice to me—true nice, not Avery’s sugary poison of inviting-me-to-this-weird-test-party nice. And four seconds is more than I ever thought I’d get. It’s the most I’ve had in a long time. Jack’s lip quirks up in a sneer. Say it. Say one more thing, pretty boy. I dare you to. “You’re pathetic,” he says. That’s the first time I punch Jack Hunter’s face. And as my knuckles connect with his stupid high cheekbones and he staggers back with a furious blizzard brewing in his icy eyes, I somehow get the feeling it won’t be the last.

Immurement by Norma Hinkens {Excerpt, Interview + Giveaway}

The earth’s core overheats. The sovereign leader vanishes. A young girl is the survivors’ only hope …

What little land is habitable is patrolled by cutthroat gangs of escaped subversives, but that’s not the greatest threat facing sixteen-year-old Derry Connelly, her brother Owen, and a ragged band of Preppers holed up in a bunker in the Sawtooth Mountains. Mysterious hoverships operated by clones are targeting adolescents for extraction.

Owen, is one of the first to disappear. To save him, Derry must strike a deal with the murderous subversives, and risk a daring raid to infiltrate the heart of the extraction operation.

But will the rookie leader falter when forced to choose between her brother and a clone who ignites something inside her she didn’t know was possible?

“What do you think he meant about saving Owen?” Trout looks at me curiously. “I thought he was dead.”
“He is,” I say, too sharply.
The room falls silent. My brain screams a million thoughts at me. I clench my trembling fingers into fists. It all seems unreal—the kind of heart-stopping nightmare you wake up from, gasping for air, soaked in sweat.
After what Won said, I’m questioning everything. What if I’ve made a terrible mistake? What if Owen's still breathing when Lyong finds him? What if they take him to Sektor Sieben and hardwire some kind of circuit board into his brain? I jam my hands into my hair and blow a few listless puffs of air over my face. I’m suddenly burning up in the bunker. I turn around and walk unevenly back to my seat, legs bending like reeds.
Big Ed scratches the back of his neck, throws me an uneasy look. The Council members look at me expectantly, but I avert my gaze and sink back in my chair, undone and disconnecting. I have nothing to offer them. All I ever wanted was the chance to step up and be somebody, but that dream’s become my burden. Do they think I can just take over where Owen left off? Lead a teenage flash mob to take on the Schutz Clones.
And now that the Sweepers know we have some kind of resistance movement going, they’ll be ready for us when we go back. I groan and bury my face in my hands. When we go back. It’s like I have a subliminal death wish.
I save your brother. Won’s words sear my brain. Even more agonizing because the lie preys on my tattered emotions. There’s nothing Won can do that will bring Owen back, but I can’t stop speculating about what he meant. I know what Won’s idea of saving brain-dead participants entails, and the thought of Owen being subjected to anything like that makes me want to put Won’s head on a spike.
I rub my hands vigorously over my face as if to scrub the grisly images of Sektor Sieben from my mind. It may be too late to save Owen, but there are others. I owe it to Mason to try and free the rest of the clones. And then there’s the deviations—I felt their silent pleas. The Sweepers have to be stopped.
But how?

Interview with the Author

What is the hardest part about being a writer?

Treating it like a real job where you have to show up at a certain time and put in your hours on a daily basis. It’s all too easy to  throw in a load of laundry, start answering emails and jump on Facebook, and before you know it half the morning has been swallowed up with trivial pursuits. Once you commit to the discipline of treating your writing time as sacred, you can make real progress in terms of the quality of your craft, and the quantity of writing you produce.

What inspired you to write this book?

I've always been fascinated by regimes and resistance movements, and the heroes who emerge from atrocities. I grew up reading every concentration camp escape story I could get my hands on. As an author, I find it intriguing to place characters in dystopian, post-apocalyptic or sci-fi settings and watch what unfurls inside them as they go head to head with staggering odds. After spending several summers in Idaho, and learning more about Preppers and survivalists, the idea to plant Derry Connolly in a bunker community of homesteaders and mountain men took seed and The Undergrounders Series was born.

How many hours per day do you spend writing?

I aim for about three hours of writing time, five days a week. I sometimes do some editing later in the day if I have extra time, but with three kids heading in different directions most days, it gets frantic!

Have you always enjoyed writing?

I grew up among rich storytelling traditions in my native Ireland and it was a natural transition for me to try my hand at writing. Irish legends are full of action, adventure, impossible missions, and unlikely heroes, and to this day nothing captivates me more than an epic story. Anything along the lines of The Hunger Games or The Divergent Series is always a must read for me, only because I’m endlessly fascinated by the capacity of heroic individuals to rise above tyranny and change the course of history. As a child, I was always reading or scribbling something, and I have a stack of poems, stories and half-finished projects that document some of the big picture ideas I was wrestling with even back then.

How did you choose the title?

There are three books in the series and the titles track the internal growth of the main protagonist Derry Connolly.

Immurement is the state of being entombed or confined in an enclosed space. At the outset of book one Derry is trapped in her own self-doubt and insecurity. The bunker symbolizes the prison she yearns to break out of in order to find her place and calling in a world with no rule book.

Embattlement is the state of being engaged in battle or conflict. As well as describing the obvious physical struggle against the Sweepers, the title symbolizes the “civil war” of sorts that wages inside Derry as she rises up against everything that has held her back.

Judgement is the act of imposing judgement. Derry discovers a lot of harsh truths about leadership during her journey, not the least of which is that every great leader must discern when to seek reconciliation and when to pursue retribution. Internally, Derry must evaluate her own moral imperfections and the darkness lurking in her own heart.

Best piece of advice for writers trying to break in?

If you are certain writing is where your passion and strengths intersect, don’t take your eyes off the goal. Put your shoulder to the wheel and throw your whole heart into mastering the craft, and taking incremental steps toward publication. Dogged persistence will get you there in the end, and the talent you have honed along the way will be your staying power.

Black Crow (The Raven Series, #2) by J.L. Weil {Excerpt & Giveaway}

I’VE LOST SO MUCH.
FAMILY. MY HOME.
PRIDE. MY IDENTITY.

And I couldn’t help but feel it’s entirely my fault. There is no one else to blame.

I’ve quickly learned that being the White Raven isn’t easy. The dead are restless and angry, and I don’t know the first thing about being a banshee. Those around me will get hurt. To keep them safe, I must endure painful decisions.

Zane Hunter, the ultra-bad boy who stole my heart, is one of those difficult decisions. Our souls are synchronized, making us a compatible duo. Too bad I’m engaged to his brother.

My forbidden relationship with Zane is complicated. Deep down I want more than what my duty demands of me, what my family’s past has shaped for me.

Our problematic relationship only increases in tenfold when a surprise I never saw coming shows up in Raven Hallow, changing the game. I thought I had nothing left to lose…I was wrong.

Yeah, being a banshee isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

As I stared down at my phone, I wondered when or if I would ever see Parker again. I scowled. A pang of regret and guilt hit me in the chest, and before I had a second to sort through what I was feeling, a dark shadow blocked my sunlight.
I was almost afraid to turn around. Overhead, the two hawks cried in rapid succession, sending out a warning. Whoever it was had them up in arms.
“I was surprised to see you alone, but then I saw your babysitters.” Apsyn dropped down in the sand beside me. A pair of pink shades was situated on top of her head, chestnut locks cascading around her oval face.
I let out a breath of relief. “Oh, thank God. I thought you might be a hallow or worse.”
She laughed. “Well, that’s a first. No one’s ever mistook me for a ghost. And what could be worse than the dead determined to make chop liver out of you?”
My nose crinkled. “I could think of two.”
She placed a slim finger to her lips. “Let me guess. Zane and Zander?”
I shuffled my shoes, burying them into the sand. “Bullseye.”
“I don’t see how that’s a dilemma. It sounds more like an opportunity.” Her mischievous smile twinkled. “Want to trade places?”
“If it was possible, I might actually take you up on it.”
“You like to run?” she asked, eyeing my gear.
My lips quipped. “Nope.”
“Got some excess energy to burn? That I understand. It will get easier once you learn to control your powers. I bet one of your dilemmas might be able to help you burn through it.”
I felt my cheeks start to stain pink. Not because I was embarrassed, but because I was envisioning what it would be like to throw all this amped up energy into lip locking with Zane. “I’m trying to avoid a catastrophe, not enflame it.”
She dug her fingers into the sand behind her and leaned back. “My way sounds more fun…and it looks like you could use a little fun. I doubt you’ll have much time to yourself soon.”
“I don’t remember signing up for summer school, but it looks like I’ve been enrolled into reaper combat and the history of banshees.”
Her glossy lips arched. “I enjoy a little one on one.”
I just bet she did. Aspyn was the type of girl who was sexy without even trying. If I did or say half the things she did, I would look like an idiot. “I’m going to suck at this, you know,” I said, thinking about how much I was going to embarrass myself. “I possess no athletic skills whatsoever.”
“Kissing is a sport. I bet you’re good at that.”
My eyes narrowed. “Is sex the only thing on your mind?”
She stretched out her legs like a lazy cat. “I’m an eighteen, unattached, hot female. Obliviously, it’s all I think about when I’m not thinking about destroying souls.”
