The Way It Hurts
by Patty Blount
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Release Date: August 1, 2017
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary

There may be two sides to every story, but sometimes there's only one way to set things right...

Music is Elijah's life. His band plays loud and hard, and he'll do anything to get them a big break. He needs that success to help take care of his sister, who has special needs. So he'd rather be practicing when his friends drag him to a musical in the next town...until the lead starts to sing.

Kristen dreams of a career on stage like her grandmother's. She knows she needs an edge to get into a competitive theater program--and being the star in her high school musical isn't going to cut it. The applause and the attention only encourage her to work harder.

Elijah can't take his eyes off of Kristen's performance, and snaps a photo of her in costume that he posts online with a comment that everybody misunderstands. It goes viral. Suddenly, Elijah and Kristen are in a new spotlight as the online backlash spins out of control. And the consequences are bigger than they both could have ever imagined because these threats don't stay online...they follow them into real life.

Excerpt:

Elijah took my hands. “Okay, look. Maybe you’re right. Maybe these people are taking this whole battle thing way too seriously. If you’re scared, then we’ll stop. No more posts except for appearance information.”

“So no more battle of the sexes, no more make Kris scream?”

He held up his hand. “Swear to God.”

“Okay.” I sighed in relief. “You’d really do that?”

He leaned closer and repeated the vow. “I promise, Kris.”

And just like that, I forgot why I was mad at him. I couldn’t talk, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t even blink because I was afraid he’d let go. This was the part of him I adored. I clung to him for a long moment, and when his gaze drifted to my mouth, I wondered if—hoped—prayed—he’d finally kiss me.

And then, Etta’s voice suddenly spoke inside my head. “Well, my God, darling, it’s the twenty-first century. What on earth are you waiting for? You can kiss him.”

I could. Yes. Yes, I could just lift my head and lean in and kiss Elijah Hamilton like it was a normal, ordinary occurrence.

Right. Like kissing Elijah Hamilton would ever be ordinary?

I’d watched him kiss that girl at the mall and was sure I’d memorized all the steps in his routine. He’d move in, grip my face between his hands, run his thumb along my jaw, and finally, glide his arm down around my body, pulling me against his own, all the while, peeking through his lashes to see if I enjoyed it.

I wasn’t sure when I decided—even what made me decide. I just touched my lips to his and waited.

It took a second or two. But then there was a sudden, tiny squeak from him, and I felt the pulse in his wrist leap under my fingertips.page149image47024

And then, his hands were in my hair, angling my head just the way he liked it, his tongue brushing against mine, so soft it might have been my imagination...except imaginary kisses were never so intense. He kissed me like I was a song he wrote, lips wrapped around every word until it hummed with hidden meaning and promise, and his hands held me the way they held his guitar—like the music would stop if he let me go.

Native New Yorker Patty Blount is the award-winning author of several critically acclaimed internet issues novels for teens as well as a few adult contemporary romances. She is inspired to write by such greats as Judy Blume, JK Rowling, and Gayle Forman. In fact, Judy Blume is the reason Patty elected to write under her real name…so she’d appear on shelves next to her idol. Patty adores writing; she’s written everything from technical manuals to song lyrics (see THE WAY IT HURTS, coming August 2017). Patty wants you to know she loves chocolate…really, really loves chocolate.

When not crushing on actors Gilles Marini or Sam Heughan, Patty can be found sitting in traffic somewhere on the Long Island Expressway, listening to audio books or talking wildly to herself about plots and characters. Prone to falling madly in love with fictional characters, Patty suffers frequent broken hearts when they all invariably prefer the heroine to her… go figure. When she’s not writing, Patty loves to watch bad sci-fi movies and live tweet the hilarity, and scour Pinterest for ideas on awesome bookcases. The very last thing 17-year-old Emmott Syddall wants is to turn out like her dad. She’s descended from ten generations who never left their dull English village, and there’s no way she’s going to waste a perfectly good life that way. She’s moving to London and she swears she is never coming back.

But when the unexplained deaths of her neighbors force the government to quarantine the village, Em learns what it truly means to be trapped. Now, she must choose. Will she pursue her desire for freedom, at all costs, or do what’s best for the people she loves: her dad, her best friend Deb, and, to her surprise, the mysterious man in the HAZMAT suit?

Inspired by the historical story of the plague village of Eyam, this contemporary tale of friendship, community, and impossible love weaves the horrors of recent news headlines with the intimate details of how it feels to become an adult—and fall in love—in the midst of tragedy.

This is a powerful and moving story and yes, of course, I found myself crying as the author pulled me into this well-written story line. This is a well-rounded book with a little bit of everything and I even found myself feeling welcomed in the village. The premise of the story does not disappoint and I found myself captivated in this tale.

Saving a few times, like when he was sleeping, living with Andrei was a continuous challenge. He was just not designed with any sense of living in a world sans chess. He couldn’t even pour tea without spilling it in the saucer. He would never remember to turn the gas off after cooking. And the only thing he knew how to cook was an omelette. It was scary to be in the same car with him because he would just stop anywhere and start making notes on some game.

He would forget his wallet in the restaurant and keys in his car. It’s hard to imagine that the genius Andrei, immaculate on the chessboard, would be so clumsy in real life. The man who could think through lengthy lines of variations in his head could not string together two words to hold a conversation. He never spoke to my parents. He would say he didn’t have any conversational skills. Surely, he could have learnt these skills, if only he had made an effort.

I kept my hopes up for six long years and then one day I realized that ‘if only’ doesn’t work with people like Andrei. If it could, he wouldn’t be Andrei then.

{Review} A Strange Companion by Lisa Manterfield @lisamanterfield

A Strange Companion
by Lisa Manterfield
Published April 4th 2017 by Steel Rose Press

Kat Richardson isn’t running away from grief; she’s just hiding out in a gloomy Welsh university town until she’s sure it’s gone. Now, one year, nine months, and 27 days after the climbing death of her first love, Gabe, she thinks she’s ready to venture out into the relationship world again. And Owen—a cake-baking, Super Ball-making chemistry student—appears to be a kind, funny, and very attractive option.

But the arrival of Kat’s newly adopted niece, Mai, forces her home to northern England, where she runs headfirst into all the memories of Gabe she’s tried to leave behind—and discovers that Mai stirs up an unnerving feeling of déjà vu. Before long, Kat’s logical, scientific beliefs about life after death are in battle with what she feels to be true—that reincarnation is real and Gabe has come back to her through Mai. The question now, is why?

Taking on the topics of love, loss, and how we deal with grief, A Strange Companion is a twisted love triangle among the living, the dead, and the reincarnated.

Goodreads

This book left me hoping that reincarnation is real. I cried, I laughed, and most often than not I got angry with the choices made by the characters. All in all, this was a well-written story that kept me engaged until the end.

{Blog Tour w/Dream Cast & Review} The Hunted by Emerald Barnes

Welcome to our stop during the blog tour for The Hunted. This stop includes a review, an excerpt, and Emerald showcases her Dream Cast. Let's get started!!

The Hunted, Knight's Academy #2

by Emerald Barnes

Myka Williams has been forced out of Knight's Academy and is on the run, constantly moving to keep the vampires off her trail until Preston's venom is no longer coursing through her veins. But she isn’t alone.

Brent Jacobson is her protector, training her and teaching her how to be the werewolf she’s destined to be. He's annoying, stubborn—and hot. But there’s something he isn't telling her.

Myka has to come face-to-face with the truth of who she really is. Will she find safety, or will she always be hunted?

Preston had been hot on their trail for two months now. The werewolves hoped the venom would be out of her system soon. Apparently, Preston had been filling her full of it since she’d first been assigned to him. It bothered her that she hadn’t known what he was doing, and even now, the memories weren’t accessible. The only memory she had left of one of his bites was when he’d kidnapped her and tried to make werewolf/vampire babies with her. For all she knew, they still planned on capturing her and using her for exactly that, and that’s why she had to go on the run with Brent. There was something he wasn’t telling her, though. She had gathered that much, but Brent wouldn’t let on to the real reason he had run away with her. It had something to do with her birthmark, though he never opened up about it.

The worst part about being on the run was not knowing when—if ever—she’d be able to see the people she cared about most. She had to leave everyone behind: Jilly, Barry, and Olivia. Milo. What was worse, she had to leave a stupid letter about running away because she was adopted. She couldn’t care less about that. Barry and Jilly were her parents.

And then there was Milo. He knew the truth, but it didn’t matter. Myka knew they couldn’t be together. He was a hybrid; she was a werewolf. It wouldn’t work no matter how much she wanted it to. She exhaled slowly and closed her eyes.

Brent’s phone rang, distracting her from her pity-party. She stood from the bed and wondered if she should pick it up or not. Brent would be angry if she did. She walked to it, knowing that she should let it go to voicemail, but when she saw who was calling, there was no way she could ignore it.

“Hello,” she said, her voice shaking and her heartbeat pounding in her ears.

“Myka?” Milo whispered her name, and tears stung her eyes. “How are you?”

“I’m fine.” Ugh, that was lame, she thought. She was far from fine.

He hesitated before asking, “Where’s Brent?”

“In the shower. You want me to get him?”

“No. I’ll call back.”

She nodded, fully aware that he wouldn’t be able to see her, but she couldn’t speak. All the emotions she’d been holding back wanted to burst out right then, and she wanted to say so much. I miss you was on the tip of her tongue, but she couldn’t say the words. It made everything seem too final.

“Myks, you still there?” he asked.

“Yeah.” She wiped away a tear rolling down her cheek. She refused to cry. “How’s Liv?”

“She’s good. Fighting mad that you left.” Milo laughed, and she had forgotten how much she’d missed hearing it. She could almost see the rare smile of his, the one he had around her and no one else.

“Will you tell her that I’m sorry?” Myka asked.

“I will.”

“Who did you call?!” Brent’s angry voice made her jump. She turned around to see Brent, soaking wet and in nothing but a towel.

“No one. Milo called. I just answered.”

This story practically picks up within days of the last one and this book does not disappoint. If anything, we continue to see a continued growth not only with the amazing characters but also in the fluidity of the story line. Readers of all ages will fall in love with this series and this talented author.

I cannot wait until the next book!!

When most authors write their novels, they think about what it will be like to have their beloved characters on the big screen. I’ve thought about it many times when it comes to my novels, and with The Hunted, Knight’s Academy Book 2, my newest release, that was the case too.

So, my dream cast for The Hunted would look something like this.

Myka Williams: Shelley Hennig

Shelley is already great at playing the part of a shifter. Sure, in Teen Wolf, she’s a werecoyote, but I think she would transition well as a werewolf. She also just has that look that I picture Myka having. Long dark hair, tanned skin, and sort of a cute but sassy look on her face.

Brent Jacobson: Drew Roy

Drew has been one of my favorite actors since Falling Skies aired. He’s adorable, but he can also be kick-butt. That’s Brent, and I think Drew would be a really good fit.

Olivia Michaels: Molly Quinn

I’ve always been a huge fan of Castle, and when I was writing the first Knight’s Academy book, I was watching the series. And Molly Quinn was always how I pictured Liv. She’s gorgeous but fierce. I love that, and it’s Liv to a “t”!

Milo Farrah: Dylan Sprayberry

I love Teen Wolf, and Dylan was a great addition to it. And I think he would be the perfect Milo. He has those great eyes and hair, and I think he could play the broody vamp very well.

Luka Demarcus: Josh Hutcherson

Josh is the perfect Luka because he’s like an adorable geek, just like Luka. He’s just how I imagined Luka.

Barry Williams: Nathan Fillion

Nathan would be the perfect Barry. Sure, Nathan is a bit of a comedian and Barry isn’t, but I think that he could still play the part well.

Jilly Williams: Candace Cameron Bure

When I think of Jilly, I think elegant and graceful. That’s why Candace Cameron Bure came to mind. She would be a great fit for Jilly.

Preston Carter: Zac Efron

Okay. Sure, Preston is the bad guy. But think about. He’s hot and can be charming, just like Zac. I think Zac could pull of the bad guy thing pretty well.

Marcus Knight: Nestor Carbonell

Nestor Carbonell just has that look. He can be a good guy or a bad one. His sleek appearance really just reminds me of how amazing he would be at playing Headmaster Marcus Knight.
