By R.J. Wood
Genre: Fantasy/ Science Fiction/ Sword and Space/ Space Fantasy
Age category: Middle Grade/ Young Adult
Release Date: January 24, 2015

Jake Flynn’s parents disappeared when he was a baby. On his twelfth birthday, the mystery of why his parents disappeared begins to unravel when he discovers a glowing talisman with a message from his father.

Jake is directed to a derelict sailboat in a field. He watches in awe as the talisman knits ropes and sails for it out of golden energy. Awash in light, the boat sails up into space, and the voyages of Jake Flynn begin.

During the quest to find his parents, Jake encounters space pirates in tall sailing ships, channelers that can wield energy like magic, and evil cabalists led by a sinister snake-woman. Assisted by a young healer and her aged protector, a spirited cabin girl, and a salty space captain, Jake learns that he too can channel, and that he is central to stopping the cabalists from resurrecting a long-dead evil.

Puzzles, a pirate asteroid, walking the plank, fantastic magic, traps, treasure caves, multiple planets and great ship battles – Jake must experience them all on this epic sword and space adventure.

By the end, Jake will discover the truth about his destiny, realize that family can transcend blood lines, and understand that his own needs are sometimes less important than those of others.

For centuries, the faithful had made pilgrimages to the Creator’s Table. Over the years a simple shrine had been built. At the center of the mesa’s flat top was a large circular dais formed from hundreds of slate bricks. Each had been painstakingly shaped, carried to the top, and laid in place by faithful hands. Time and the elements had taken their toll, however, giving the shrine a weathered look. The desert winds at the top insured a perpetual dusting.
Otto followed faint footprints leading from the edge of the circle to its center. There, his eyes fell upon a table made of three stone slabs. It was the simplest of alters for the creator of all things who needed nothing more. Kneeling before it, in silent prayer, was Otto’s granddaughter, Starla Silvertree.
Setting down the end of his staff, he used precious seconds to take in the moment. The edges of the young woman’s hair shimmered in the moonlight. She wore a dark wool cloak with the hood pulled down. The exposed hems of her green silk robes tugged in the wind.
The vision sent him to youthful days past, and he swam through the memories for a while. The image of her grandmother at a similar age broke through clear as day. She was equally beautiful with her coy smile. His mind turned to their forbidden romance shared during the best summer of his long life. But the path of being a father and grandfather had not been his to travel. Society and her parents would not have it, and she was quickly and quietly married off to another before the truth of her condition was well known. The torment he felt now came not so much from that loss, but from the oath of secrecy he took regarding it. The pain of watching his daughter grow-up from afar was hard to bear, but to now watch his granddaughter do the same up close was a crueler torment. The young woman kneeling before him did not know she was his granddaughter - a fact she would never know if he kept his word, and Ottomeyer of House Riversend always kept his word.
It had taken him years to learn to live with his situation, to make peace with the emotions of it. When he had received the unexpected summons from Starla’s grandmother along with a desperate plea, he soon found himself before his old love once more. Over a century had passed since he had last beheld her, but at first glance, the long truce was broken. The walls around his heart crumbled. It was all he could manage just to hold back his tears. That was the moment he was informed of the dangers facing Starla and her desperate need for a protector. His abilities and reputation as a hero, albeit an old retired one, and his unique relation to Starla made him the perfect candidate. Without hesitation, he promised Starla’s mother and grandmother to keep her safe from her enemies. A second oath he would take to his grave.

R.J. WoodAbout the Author:

R. J. Wood has been creating stories and adventures for others since 1979. A bard at heart, he trained in Drama (BA) and History (MA) while at university. He currently lives near Snoqualmie Falls in Washington State with his wife and children. There he does a little fishing, some adventuring, and of course, his writing.

Like everyone of my generation and beyond I have been heavily influenced by film. I like to think of my books as movies in my mind. I developed my creative writing through fantasy, science fiction, and paranormal RPGs. My degree in drama helps me with story, characters, and especially dialogue. Having an advanced history degree is excellent for plots and characters, but it also helps me with world building.
