Dear Thomas,
I know you're angry. It's true, I was sent to expose your mentor as a fraud illusionist, and instead I have put your secret in jeopardy. I fear I have even put your life in jeopardy. For that I can only beg your forgiveness. I've fallen for you. You know I have. And I never wanted to create a rift between us, but if it means protecting you from those who wish you dead—I'll do it. I'll do anything to keep you safe, whatever the sacrifice. Please forgive me for all I've done and what I'm about to do next. I promise, it's one magic trick no one will ever see coming.

Illusions Playlist

Below I have included a playlist that I created during the drafting and editing of Illusions that put me in the mindset and captured the mood of the time era and story, but also includes more modern songs whose lyrics capture important elements of Thomas and Sav’s relationship. Enjoy!

  • “Lightning Strike (What if This Storm Ends?)” by Snow Patrol – this to me, captured Thomas and Sav’s relationship perfectly. It manages to capture how important they are to one another while also creating a sense of risk and how much they have to lose.
  • “Cosmic Love” by Florence + The Machine – in addition to being romantic, the imagery in this song also embodies the beauty of Thomas coming to accept himself and his magic through Sav’s help.
  • “Requiem for a Tower” by Escala – I can only write to instrumental music since lyrics always end up distracting me. This song was one of my favorites to write to because it got me pumped and because the song itself feels like it should be playing alongside a theatrical trailer. Because of this, I would always imagine bits and pieces of pivotal moments in the story playing out to this song.
  • “A New Trick” composed by David Juyan for The Prestige soundtrack The Prestige was a major inspiration for this book and was one of the reasons I wanted to write about stage magicians in the Victorian era. This particular song from the film’s soundtrack really transported me to that time and created the perfect mood for the story.
  • “Empire” by Of Monsters & Men – This is a song that I feel really captures specific moments between Sav and Thomas where they feel like their own world together, whether it be their first kiss or in the moments where Thomas lets his walls down and uses his magic in front of Sav.
  • “The Yawning Grave” by Lord Huron – There is a certain moment (or I suppose, a series of moments) in a specific character’s arc that this song embodies perfectly with its lyrics and overall mood. I can’t say much else about this because it would give too much away.
  • “What the Water Gave Me” by Florence + The Machine – I think the ominous imagery and lyricism lines up well with a lot of the dangers that both Thomas and Sav fface and the pressure that their various secrets put them under.
  • “King and Lionheart” by Of Monsters & Men – This song makes me think of the sweeter, more carefree moments in Thomas and Sav’s relationship, especially toward the beginning when they are first getting to know one another.
